Our national anthem must include all Canadians

Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto applauds Ottawa-Vanier MP Mauril Bélanger for re-introducing a bill that will restore gender parity to our national anthem.

Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, C.M., Senior Pastor of Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, calls upon all Members of Parliament to approve Bélanger‘s private member’s bill and correct the wording of O Canada to once again include all Canadians.

Rev. Hawkes says that “using language like ‘mankind’ and ‘all men’ to refer to both men and women is no longer appropriate. Our national anthem plays a powerful symbolic role in bringing our country together. It is embarrassing that the current version still emphasizes the importance of sons while ignoring daughters. The suggested change in no way takes away from the national anthem and, indeed, enhances it.”

The popular 1908 English lyrics included the gender neutral phrase “True patriot love thou dost in us command.” It was changed to “in all thy son’s command” in 1914.
