LGBTQ+ Afghan Refugees Response Program

The situation in Afghanistan is a grave concern to those of us concerned about the plight of LGBTQ+ refugees and to folks who follow our LGBTQ+ refugee work. It is also top of mind of the Canadian government. As the exclusive LGBTQ+ Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) with the government of Canada, MCC Toronto is encouraged to see the magnitude of support being expended to the Afghan nationals especially those within the LGBTQ+ community who are deemed extremely vulnerable. The government of Canada has affirmed its commitment to the people of Afghanistan and has announced a special program to resettle 40,000 Afghan refugees to Canada.

In response, MCC Toronto has launched a LGBTQ+ Afghan Refugee Response Program and is committed to assisting LGBTQ+ Afghan nationals who are in desperate need of resettlement to Canada. We continue to monitor the horrific situation in Afghanistan as the Taliban has reclaimed control of Afghanistan which puts many of our loved ones who are members of the LGBTQ+ community at risk. Many persons have fled the country in fear of their lives, and it has been reported in the media that the Taliban ‘have a ‘kill list’ of gay people in Afghanistan, forcing many to hide.

We would like to invite Canadians and permanent residents who are interested in sponsoring LGBTQ+ Afghan Refugees with MCC Toronto to register; encourage LGBTQ+ Afghan nationals who are outside of their country of origin to contact us for resettlement; and welcome volunteers and donors to support our efforts.
