The Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto (MCC Toronto) will mark the 25th Anniversary of the World’s First legal same-sex marriages on January 17, 2026, celebrating a milestone that forever changed the landscape of equality and love in Canada and around the world.
On January 14, 2001, MCC Toronto Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes officiated the marriage ceremonies of Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell, and Elaine and Anne Vautour, using the ancient legal tradition of reading the banns of marriage. This courageous act—performed years before same-sex marriage was recognized by governments anywhere in the world—sparked a groundbreaking legal challenge that ultimately led to civil recognition of same-sex marriage in Ontario in 2003 and across Canada in 2005.
