Rev. Jeff Rock was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario with deep family roots on Manitoulin Island.
His first love was theatre, but his second love was the sciences, which led him as a bright-eyed 18 year-old to Montreal where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University. It was during those years that Jeff found his third love and true calling to serve the church. When his parents came for his graduation, he made the decision to take the plunge into Ministry and soon after began a Master of Divinity degree at The United Theological College, also in Montreal.
Jeff also completed a year-long residency as a Spiritual Care Provider at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto before completing his Masters degree with an internship in Edmonton. After Ordination he spent 6 years in Ministry with the people of Gaetz Memorial United Church in Red Deer, Alberta. During that time he was involved in many community initiatives, culminating in running as a Liberal candidate in the 2015 Federal Election. When asked by his congregation why he wanted to run for office, Jeff’s reply was, “Because there are questions that need to be asked.”
Jeff is passionate about Indigenous issues, harm reduction, and building bridges across our differences to build inclusive community. Jeff has a 5 year-old Greyhound-Dalmatian named Chaz. You can often find them out and about, going for long walks and jogs, camping or cuddling.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spare time? What spare time? I like to keep a full schedule! So am not often sitting still. However, when I’m not working you can find my Greyhound-Dalmatian Chaz and I out and about in town. We both LOVE the dog park near our new home and are there 3-4 times a day. We like to go for long walks and catch Pokemon together and work up an appetite and then cook a nice meal and sometimes Chaz even gets to enjoy some people food. I haven’t had a TV for 15 years, but like to keep up with popular culture and confess I’m a Facebook addict.
What inspires you?
As an off the chart extrovert it is people who truly inspire me. I’m inspired most when I witness people from totally different backgrounds connecting at a deep level. The church at its best is a diverse group of people coming together on their respective spiritual journeys to learn and grow from each other and their experiences of meaning, purpose and the divine.
If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
Superpower, eh? Hmmmmm This is a tough one, but I’d love to be able to fly.
What’s something quirky about you?
I’m not sure if there is anything NOT quirky about me… I’m a pretty quirky guy. I love wearing funky socks for one!
