Position Title: Director of Development

Hours: Full Time (40 hours per week), 2-year contract with potential for renewal.

Summary of Position:

The Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto (MCC Toronto) is currently seeking a passionate and experienced full-time Director of Development with a proven track record in managing fundraising campaigns, coupled with strong leadership capabilities. This individual will play a crucial role in advancing MCC Toronto’s mission and vision through strategic fundraising and development initiatives. Reporting to the Senior Pastor and collaborating closely with the Executive Director & COO, the Director of Development will spearhead efforts to secure financial support from various sources. Leveraging Salesforce, they will effectively manage donors, fundraising events, and campaigns. Cultivating relationships, crafting compelling proposals, and stewarding donors to sustain and enhance MCC Toronto’s impactful programs and initiatives will be key responsibilities. The ideal candidate will possess strong fundraising acumen, strategic thinking skills, and a deep-seated passion for social justice within the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Compensation:

Salary range of $80,000 – $90,000 per year to commensurate with experience, with vacation and benefits after a 3-month probationary period. Also included is a 4% RRSP matching program after 1 year of service.

Organizational Overview:

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2023, Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto (MCC Toronto) was established in 1973 as part of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, a denomination and global LGBTQ+ Christian movement. Throughout its history, MCC Toronto has been a place of worship and a place of action. Our weekly Worship Services are attended by over 600 congregants both in-person and online. We count a broader congregant community of over 2,000 members drawn from many different religious backgrounds and beliefs, gender identities, gender expressions, sexual orientations, racial and cultural backgrounds, countries of origin, socioeconomic realities, and abilities. We are a proud vibrant, inclusive, and progressive faith community; at MCC Toronto everyone matters and everyone belongs.

Rooted in the 2SLGBTQ+ community, MCC Toronto has long been at the centre of community activism. We have been home to the Triangle Program, Canada’s first 2SLGBTQ+ High School since 1995. We were national leaders in the fight for same sex marriage. Our LGBTQ+ Refugee Programs have served over 8,000 refugees since 2007 and through our status as the exclusive Sponsorship Agreement Holder for LGBTQ+ refugees to Canada, we have sponsored 75 refugees to safety in Canada since 2013.

In 2022, MCC Toronto announced that it had raised a record-setting CAD $5 million through a major gift campaign to help support an elevation of our human rights work through expanded programming, new partnerships, and an emphasis on creating impact and change.

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Development is an integral part of MCC Toronto’s staff team and part of its executive leadership team. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Fundraising Strategy:
    • Develop and execute a strategic fundraising plan that closely with MCC Toronto’s mission, vision, and priorities.
    • Identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors, sponsors, and partners to diversify and expand the organization’s funding base.
    • Implement effective stewardship strategies to foster and strengthen relationships with existing donors and supporters.
  2. Grant Writing and Management:
    • Research, identify, and pursue grant opportunities from government agencies, foundations, and other funding sources.
    • Collaborate with relevant staff members to prepare compelling grant proposals, applications, and reports, ensuring alignment with grant requirements and deadlines.
    • Maintain meticulous records of grant activities and adhere to compliance standards for accurate reporting.
  3. Donor Engagement and Cultivation:
  • Develop and execute strategies to engage donors, fostering long-term relationships and donor loyalty.
  • Plan and execute fundraising events, campaigns, and initiatives to raise awareness and support for MCC Toronto’s programs and initiatives.
  • Utilize Salesforce to effectively manage donor relationships, track interactions, and analyze donor data to inform targeted fundraising efforts.
  1. Leadership and Collaboration:
    • Provide leadership and guidance to the development team, including fundraising staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
    • Collaborate closely with other departments and senior leadership to align fundraising efforts with organizational goals and activities.
    • Represent MCC Toronto at community events, networking opportunities, and fundraising functions to enhance visibility and garner support.
  2. Financial Management:
  • Develop and oversee the departmental budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and alignment with fundraising goals.
  • Monitor revenue streams, expenses, and fundraising metrics to track progress and identify areas for enhancement.

Note: some evening and weekend work may be required to accommodate fundraising events and donor engagement activities.

 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, fundraising, or a related field.
  • CFRE designation considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising, with a proven track record of success in donor cultivation, grant writing, and fundraising strategy development.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and inspire donors, volunteers, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices, ethical standards, and legal requirements related to charitable giving.
  • Experience using Salesforce or similar CRM platforms to manage donors, fundraising events, and campaigns.
  • Willingness to work within a progressive faith community is required, though no faith affiliation is required.
  • Experience in working with 2SLGBTQ2+ communities, racialized communities, disability communities, socio-economic diversity, and other diverse populations is required. Training in diversity and inclusion is considered an asset.
