Position Title: Integration & Peer Support Coordinator

Hours: Part-time (25 hours per week), 12 months contract, hybrid

Summary of Position:

MCC Toronto is looking to hire a part-time Refugee Integration & Peer Support Coordinator to join our staff team. The role will focus on supporting MCC Toronto’s LGBTQ+ Refugee Programs in providing assistance to inland refugee claimants who face persecution due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE). The Integration & Peer Support Coordinator will report to the Director of LGBTQ+ Refugee Programs and work under their supervision.

Compensation:

$20.00/hr for 25hrs/week

MCC Toronto is a registered charitable organization that operates an LGBTQ+ Refugee Program; since the inception of said program in 2007, we have been helping to shape Canadian values of inclusion, diversity, and equality. We are known for pioneering many ground-breaking human rights and social justice work, including our involvement in the world’s first legalized same-gender marriage in 2001.

Located in Riverdale, MCC Toronto is home to 800+ engaged members, the award-winning Choir of MCC Toronto, and the Triangle Program, the first LGBTQ+ high school in the year. Our weekly Services – currently online – are seen around the world at www.mcctoronto.com.
As a Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) with the government of Canada, we provide help to members of the LGBTQ+ community who are seeking refugee protection because of their fear of being persecuted due to their Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE).

Responsibilities

  •  Assisting the Program Director with administrative duties such as document editing, appointment scheduling, calendar management, and similar tasks.
  • Serving as the primary contact for individuals seeking assistance or with inquiries, monitoring email inboxes and phones, and appropriately responding or redirecting requests.
  • Organizing logistics for weekly and monthly meetings, including scheduling facilitators and presenters, sending reminders to participants, updating schedules, ensuring necessary technology is available, reserving meeting rooms, setting up and tidying the rooms, and other related responsibilities.
  •  Coordinating the management of electronic and physical files and records pertaining to program participants, sponsored refugees, volunteers, and available resources.
  • Providing support at the biweekly orientation sessions for the LGBTQ+ Refugee Programs.
  • Assist with the preparation of the newsletter for the program and schedule notices to be sent to the participants from time to time
  • Providing a monthly report on the activities of the program inclusive of, but not limited to:
  1.  The number of new members who have joined MCC Toronto
  2. The participant rate in the various weekly sessions
  3. The number of membership letters requested
  4.  The number of persons who had their hearing and the decision of the said hearing

  • Having a good understanding of Canada’s refugee system, refugee issues, and immigration policy.
  •  Possessing a good understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, including those unique challenges faced by refugees who are LGBTQ+.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, including, among others, refugees, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
  •  Being an effective communicator and being able to express ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  •  Having strong organizational skills and managing multiple tasks and priorities.
  •  Possessing cultural competency and being able to work effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  •  Be able to identify problems and develop effective solutions.
  • Be able to work with sensitivity and maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.

Minimum Qualifications

  1.  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required; a business degree and/or MSW degree is desirable
  2. . A minimum of two years experience in a refugee support role as staff or volunteer.
  3.  Support the MCC Toronto’s beliefs, core values, mission and vision of the church is required.
  4.  Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
  5.  Acceptable criminal background check l is required.
