April 2021 Update

News from MCC Toronto Board of Directors for April 2021

As part of our continuing commitment to be transparent and timely in communicating with our members and congregants we want to highlight some of our recent activities. Your Board meets bi-monthly and works to provide you with the key items arising from our meetings. In addition, you can find a variety of Board documents and congregational communications here.

During our April Board meeting each Director had the opportunity to welcome Rev. June Joplin as our new Associate Pastor of Programs and Congregational Care and introduce themselves. There was lots of praise given to June and expression of how pleased we are she is now part of the MCC Toronto family. June shared how moved she was from all the positive responses she has received from Sunday’s installation and how welcome everyone has made her feel.

KPI  (Key Performance Indicators)

The Engagement Committee is pleased with the information they are gathering however with on-line services some of their KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) cannot be assessed until MCC Toronto is open for in person programs and services such as volunteer hours. What they do know is that the number of on- line viewers remains consistent and at times even higher than online viewers in 2020 – for example this year’s Easter Sunday Service was viewed by 2200 people. Very impressive.

The goal is to keep this process simple and informative that will be helpful to on going future planning within the MCC Toronto church community.

Financial Update:

Financially MCC Toronto is doing well considering the restrictions of being in lockdown for most of the past year. As you know plate offerings have not happened so far in 2021 resulting in over a $10,000 loss however on- line donations, sustained giving, plus memorial, major gifts along with government wage subsidies have been steady which is keeping our head above the water. Thank you.

Senior Pastor’s Report:

We are happy to announce three new hires:

  • Junia Joplin – Associate Pastor of Programs and Congregational Care began March 15 and is settling in great!
  • Elle Behnia – Manager of Communications and Development began March 22 and comes with extensive experience in journalism and refugee work.
  • Mekdes Tekalign Gerefa – Project Co-ordinator of the LGBTQ+ Refugee Programs through the Investing in Neighbourhood Program paid for by the City of Toronto started March 1 with a 12-month contract.

Desiree Kaunda-Wint has agreed to coordinate a regular children’s program via ZOOM. The first one was in January and the second is currently in the planning stage.

We are in the process of posting a job description for the Director of LGBTQ+ Refugee Programs.

Church on Church during Pride will be online this year.

There was a productive discussion relating to when MCC Toronto will re-open for in-person worship and programs. Because life as we know It is constantly changing this will be an on- going discussion so that when MCC Toronto opens we can meet the needs of its members and welcome all our new viewers. We will continue to prioritize the health and safety of our congregation and employees. We also acknowledge and thank our staff and key volunteers (including our fabulous choir) for their dedication and patience since mid- March 2020. We know your many pivots and new skills required to sustain us have demanded creativity, patience and energy. Thoughts and suggestions are welcomed by all.
